Used to be that all a snorkeler needed to get around was a mask, a pair of fins and a sense of adventure.
Now you can zip through the ocean on “sea rockets” – battery-powered underwater propulsion vehicles that will jet you through Hawaii’s colorful coral reefs. All tours are guided, and run $50 per half hour. They’re offered by Fair Wind Big Island Ocean Guides’ Hula Kai catamaran.
I’m of mixed minds. I love snorkeling at least partially because it’s peaceful and refreshingly low-tech. But it probably would be fun to grab hold of a Sea Rocket and indulge my inner Aquaman.
